Webinar on risk assessment from the International Beaver Burrowing in Infrastructure community

STOWA and the International Beaver Burrowing in Infrastructure community present a second webinar on 11 February 2026. This time we are looking into Risk Assessment regarding animals (Beaver and badgers) burrowing in levees and railways.

In many countries, beavers and badgers pose serious flood and derailment risks. Since it is impossible to make every embankment and railroad track beaver-safe, solutions must be found to identify the most critical areas. Using a risk assessment clarifies where the greatest risks are and helps identify locations where these animals are (more than) welcome.

In several presentations from Switzerland, Germany, England, and the Netherlands, we will explore the art of risk assessment. This webinar will provide insight into nationwide beaver assessments and assessments to locate risks on railway tracks.  Reindert Stellingwerff of the Dutch Water and Highway Authority and Torsten Heyer of TU Dresden and the Environment Agency will inform you about the Dutch, English and German approaches to identifying beaver-related risks. Yvonne Vögeli from the Swiss Railway (SBB) and Thomas Aelen from the Dutch Prorail will present the risk assessments for (their) railways.

At the end of this webinar, Marlous Leeflang will launch the new International Beaver Knowledge Hub. This website will bring together information and discussions from all countries, making international cooperation even easier.

This webinar is for anyone interested in beaver (and badger) management and in Risk Assessment. From policymakers to levee managers.
