Whether you work in the field, in research, in nature conservation or in levee and infrastructure management, data is a key resource in our daily work with beavers. But what data do we actually need? How do we collect it, what do we do with it, and how can we put it to good use? What works in practice, and what doesn't?  In this webinar, four experts from across Europe share their perspectives on these questions, moving from the bigger picture to practical application.

From the big picture…

We start with the fundamentals: what is the difference between survey and monitoring, and what is the value of baselines and long-term national datasets? Annegret Larsen (Wageningen University) connects the academic perspective to practical use, followed by Aleš Vorel (Czech University of Life Sciences Prague), who shares lessons from decades of long-term monitoring in the Czech Republic.

…to purpose and interpretation in practice

The second part focuses on how survey data informs decisions. Roisin Campbell-Palmer (Beaver Trust) explains how beaver surveys are carried out in Britain, what they are used for, and how to interpret the results when making management choices around infrastructure. Christof Angst (info fauna) then shows how Switzerland links survey and monitoring to infrastructure-related decisions within a national framework.

We will close by exploring how the International Beaver Knowledge Hub can support our work.
